Udhampur is one of the most recognized districts in the region of Jammu. The entire district is fringed under the green belt of Eucalyptus forests of Jammu & Kashmir state. It is comprised of seven tehsils named, Chenani, Udhampur, Latti, Moungri, Majalta, Ramnagar, Basantgarh and Panchari. The city of Udhampur is an extensive town amalgamated with urban facilities. It derived its name from Raja Udham Singh who ruled over this place and played important role in establishing this city.
Tactically, it is an important place for defense as well. Factor that makes it significantly vital is its strategic location. Udhampur serves as Northern Command head quarters for Indian Army and Forward Base Support Unit for Indian Air Force. It is quite famous for tourism as well. The famous shrine Maa Vaishno Devi has its presence in Udhampur district itself. It is second largest city of Jammu region while 4th largest in entire Jammu Kashmir. It is has been blessed with district and tehsil headquarters as well.
Geography of Udhampur
Udhampur is situated in the lap of Himalayas at Shiwalik Ranges in the region of Jammu. This region is comprised with Duns of Chenab valley plains of Punjab. It is a mountainous region with terrains, peaks, and meadows. Its average elevation from sea level is around 2480 feet. The location of Udhampur is 32.93 degree North and 75.13 degree East. The district is surrounded by Jammu, Reasi, Anantnag and Kathua districts. The distance of Udhampur from Jammu is approximately 64 km. The city is fringed between the River Devika and River Tawi.
Climate of Udhampur
Climatic conditions are quite suitable in Udhampur as compared to other locations of Jammu & Kashmir. It receives sub tropical climate similarl to other parts of northern India. There are 4 sub divisions, Dudu, Ramnagar, Chenani and Basantgarh. Eight tehsils in Udhampur includes Latti, Mougri, Panchari, Basantgarh, Chenani, Majalta and Udhampur.
District Development Commissioner is the head of administration in Udhampur. Large work force works under this post to include Additional Dist Dev Commissioner, Assistant Commissioner, Deputy Commissioner Revenues and Development as well as other selective officers. The city of Udhampur is administrated by the Municipal Council. Members of this council are elected from 22 wards along with few nominated ones.

Udhampur is occupied by Pahari and Duggardesh culture. People living in the town follow either Dogra culture or Pahari culture. Gujjar community is also found in some parts of Udhampur.
